White Mountains Scenic Drive

Hello from Calais, Maine.  This post will cover this past week end's travels.

Saturday morning we left Conway, New Hampshire and got some great views of Mount Washington (below).  The White Mountains in NH are gorgeous with lots of great hiking trails.

Speaking of hiking, we took a short walk to see the 64' Glen Ellis falls (below) on the Scenic Drive.  There are so many rivers and streams in the mountains that you almost can't help but see a pretty waterfall at some point.

Another short hike we took was the Hawker Trail.  There are actually 3 water falls on this hike.

We used a book that detailed all the hikes you can take in the White Mountains to select the hikes we wanted to take.  Because my knee and ankle are still a bit weak, I opted to take the easy hikes.  Unfortunately, the book we used was compiled by the Apalachian Mountain Club which apparently has a very different definition of "easy" than we do.  In fact, when we went to The Flume (see a previous post), we were asking a lot of questions about the difficulty of the trail after just coming off the "easy" Lonesome Lake hike.  The woman said, "If you did Lonesome Lake, this will be a breeze."  When I told her that Lonesome Lake was rated "easy" she laughed and said, "No, that's a high moderate to difficult hike."  So now we know.

From New Hampshire we went to Rangeley Lake and had a great visit with my cousin, Terry, whom I have not seen in about 40 years (by our best recollections).  It was great to spend a few hours together.

BUT, I am sick that I lost the photos from today.  Rangeley was beautiful this morning and there were some great shots.  I am not sure what I did but they are definately gone.

Tomorrow we leave Calais taking the Big Sur of Maine Scenic Drive down to Bar Harbor where we will spend Tuesday through Thursday.  I am really looking forward to that!  The next post will like come from there on Thursday (providing I don't lose any more pics).

  1. So enjoying the pictures and information. The boys & I have discovered a real love of hiking from our past 2 trips to Gatlinburg. I know what you mean about the "rating system" for the trails!
